Necessity Is the Mom of Invention

Manrepeller

Happy Sunday and Happy Mother's Day—I hope many pancakes have already been consumed.

Earlier this year, we published an article on "self-parenting" and I'm thinking about it again today. I know that Mother's Day can be a charged holiday for a lot of people, so I'm in the mood to broaden the definition. First, I skimmed the stories that we published last week to see if there was any evidence of things being mothered beyond the dynamic one usually expects. I know you can parent yourself, but what else, besides one's literal offspring, can one mother?

The first thing I saw was an article we published this morning, which has the word mother right there in the artwork that accompanies the headline: "Necessity Is the Mother of Invention!" This exclamation came from Leandra, during her conversation with Tibi Founder Amy Smilovic for a new series we're publishing called "Founders Discuss." This first post features a really interesting conversation between two people with zero interest in mincing words, talking about the challenges they're confronting as entrepreneurs, and the opportunities they see that are helping to light the way forward. If you're starting to feel stir crazy as far as your own creative ambitions are concerned, I think you'll find it really motivating.

Elsewhere on the site, connections to mothering are both literal and tenuous, though I hereby commit to tying this all in bow as best I can. On the literal side: We have a list of the ways Chloe Sev's new baby boy is already cooler than Amalie (written by Amalie, of course); An article featuring "11 Ideas for Turning This Tricky Mother's Day Into a Really Good One" (too late for shipping by today, of course, but plenty of room for improvisation if you're still looking for something nice to do); And at the beginning of the week, Leandra wrote a dispatch in which she found herself at a metaphorical crossroads in her parenting style while standing at an actual intersection in her neighborhood downtown.

As for the excellent stories that are tougher to connect to today's chosen theme, we have: A charming experiment in which Edith dressed her brother via FaceTime for a week (relevance: they share a mother, obvs) and a handful of stories in which we just barely stopped short of offering to be impregnated by someone or something (podcast voices, the dude from Normal People, the entire Twilight series).

Me? I already Zoomed with my mom this morning and will continue this special day by reading her May horoscope. (Virginia Rice is a classic Taurus if there ever was one.)

Till Next Week!  —Mallory
